BLOG 10: English Language Challenges

Hi students, this is your last blog of this semester. Today we want you to write about your experience writing your blogs each week, well almost each, had you written in English before at school, for example, or in other contexts? Was it difficult for you? Did you read the comments your classmates or I left you? What would you suggest to improve this activity? How do you feel your writing is now after this weekly exercise? You can also refer to your whole experience learning English at university. You also must write about the aspects of your English need to be improved and how you plan to do it. And finally, I'd like to know about how much you use English outside the class and what for. For example, you might have friends abroad and communicate with them in English, or you use it just when you listen to music or see movies or to buy on the internet. Do not forget that writing and checking your blogs during each class was part of your learning process.

I hope you can write about these questions, your ideas are welcome!!

BLOG 8: A subject you have enjoyed a lot this semester!

ANTROPOLOGÍA
EDUCACIÓN
PSICOLOGÍA
SOCIOLOGÍA

Hi there, today you must write about your favorite subject this semester. For example, when I was studying at the faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, I remember there were many subjects very interesting but there was one which became quite important for my professional work, Sociolinguistics. This subject is about how language is used according to different social factors such as age, gender, social class, political ideas, geography. The theory I studied has helped me to face some problems especially to understand certain styles of learning, because everyone is different and sometimes education professionals don't understand this fact. Education is one component of this subject which is very wide and rich in its analysis of the use of language in society. I hope you can study a subject which can go beyond the limits of the theory and the limits of the Faculty. It is very useful to learn a subject which can be applied in reality because there is a big gap between the theory and the practical uses of it. Maybe, it's possible you cannot realise right now what subject will be important but I think, at least, you can tell us which subject you have enjoyed the most this semester.

Don't forget to mention the name of the subject!!

- What you do in classes
- Mention the main contents you study
- Explain why you like the subject

BLOG 6: POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Today it's a must to do a postgraduate course on one of the areas you studied during your undergraduate period. Many universities offer a great number of them in Chile and abroad. Many Chilean students choose to study in another country because of the prestige of the foreign universities, some go to Europe or the USA, others prefer Latin America, some to study in our country. I think it's a good idea for you to do one of those courses, especially if you are interested on a specific subject. Sometimes those courses may give you some specific tools for you to focus on a particular and detailed discipline. Sometimes you have more open courses, where you have to choose amongst a big range of topics to write your dissertation or thesis. The offer is quite wide and varied and you must be extremely careful when deciding your master's degree or your PhD program. Moreover, the requisites sometimes are many and confusing and in some cases strange or difficult to get. You also need letters of recommendation from important professors, a good academic background, for instance, publications, participation in seminars, assistantships and many others university work to be accepted or get a scholarship to pay the expensive the fees. As you can see, university is not a place to be happy huhuhu and we always need to make big efforts to give the next academic or professional step in our personal career.

As you can imagine, today you will have to write about your future postgraduate course. Include in your text:

- Your reasons to do the course
- The subjects (s) you would like to study
- Where you would like to study, Chile or abroad
- How you would like to study: distance learning, blended learning, part-time or a full time course
- Any other relevant reasons or ideas

Remember to comment on 3 of your classmates' posts and the teacher's one

POST 4: MY FUTURE JOB

One of the most difficult things is to think about our future. Maybe the career we are following is not what we want and after finishing we realize we wanted another profession. Then frustration is present and it is not a good friend. We don't know what to do, we think that we should have studied another and better career, we get lost. Or maybe you can take it easily and follow another one, for example, I have a student who is a commercial engineer and now she's studying medicine at U de Chile, because engineering did not satisfy her completely, but she is happy in medicine. You might have 2 careers and work with the 2 of them at the same time, or at different times in your life. What do you think about your future job, are sure you the career you are studying is what you wanted? For me, it was difficult to decide but in the end I made it. I hope you can make it too!!

So, today you will write about your future job, please consider the following ideas to write your blog:

- What major are you studying / are you thinking of taking another one? Explain why
- What kind of job would you like to have?
- How do you imagine it?
- Outdoors /indoors?
- Would you like to travel a lot in your job?
- In an office?
- Add any other related ideas.

Don't forget to.....
- Make comments on 3 of your classmates’ posts + a comment on your teacher's post.

POST 2: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY YOUR CAREER?

When I was a child I had lots of options to study, I liked music, drama, sciences, literature and languages. Finally, I decided to study languages  because it has many options to work, for example, giving classes at schools and universities, private classes as well. I can also translate texts and work as an interpreter, and as i studied literature I can give classes of literature and of linguistics because I studied linguistics these two areas in my academic program. And believe or not, i can follow the education area as well. However, when I started to study I didn't know I could cover all these five areas, that's why I enjoyed my university experience, it was hard because I studied at Universidad de Chile, and here the professors are more demanding.

Write about the next topics:

- your dream jobs when you were a child
- other career options that you had at the moment of applying to university
- what made you decide in the end
- your experience at university until now
- the kind of job you would like to have

POST 1: A country I'd like to visit

Hi dear students! In our first blog session you'll write about a country you'd love to visit. In my case, I'd like to visit South Africa. I have read that it has nice landscapes, enormous parks, excellent food and a very mixed culture: African, European and Asian descendants, many different religions and races. Now South Africa is a multicultural country thanks to Nelson Mandela and his fight to finish with apartheid and racism.

If I go there I will visit the National and International Parks they have to see its beautiful and incredible nature with so many different animals, plants, flowers and try the fine South African wine.
I have some friends who I met last year and they have invited me so I'm going to save money to visit them in a near future. I'd love to visit Cape Town and climb its enormous mountain called the Table Mountain which you can see in the picture I have uploaded.

Pay attention, you must write about the next points:

Which country would you like to go to? Why?
- What do you know about it?
- What would you like to do there?
- Would you like to study/work/live there? Explain.
- Make comments on 3 of your classmates’ posts + a comment on your teacher's post
- Word Count: 160 words
- Share a picture with us!!
